How Does Carpal Tunnel Occur?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is the result of compression of the median nerve within the carpal tunnel (located in the wrist) which can cause numbness and tingling of the first three fingers, and potentially pain/numbness into the arm and shoulder. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be caused by a variety of factors including poor alignment of the wrists (poor ergonomic set up at work, repetitive movements), swelling (pregnancy, health conditions), and damage to the muscles and tendons that also pass through the carpal tunnel. Activities associated with tugging, pulling, pushing, or twisting movements often worsen this injury.
How To Treat Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
The physiotherapy treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome involves multiple techniques to help alleviate the symptoms, including but not limited to: forearm stretching exercises, forearm, wrist and hand strengthening, nerve gliding, manual therapy to decompress the wrist, bracing, and modalities for pain.
The purpose of physiotherapy treatment is to prevent any invasive surgical intervention or long-term damage to the nerve. Treatment can also help improve hand function/dexterity, grip strength and flexibility while reducing pain and numbness.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Carpal Tunnel?
The recovery of carpal tunnel syndrome can take time, depending on how long the median nerve has been compressed. With proper treatment, symptoms should be reduced within a few weeks, but complete resolution of the symptoms could take months. Be sure to seek medical attention sooner rather than later to avoid lengthy recovery times.
