How Does Sciatica Occur?
Sciatica is one of the most debilitating pains one can suffer, especially if left untreated. The onset of sciatica can be brought on by many different causes, including injury to the lower back, herniated discs and arthritis. However, in most instances the sciatic nerve pain is caused by strain placed on the sciatic nerve, which runs from the bottom of the spine, right down through the hip joint and leg.
Sciatica symptoms?
Sciatica symptoms can be moderate to severe pain in your lower back, loss of movement, pins and needles in your legs or toes and feet, numbness in your buttock, leg or in the lower back.
It reveals itself when the sciatic nerve is touched, then you must seek sciatica treatment immediately to avoid lengthy recovery.
Sciatica Treatment
physiotherapy and certain exercises can greatly alleviate the symptoms of sciatica and reduce the pain. Soft tissue release and manual therapy can help tremendously to reduce sciatica pain.
Alternatively or in combination, heat and ice therapy can provide immediate relief of sciatic nerve pain. Ice can help reduce inflammation, while heat encourages blood flow to the painful area.
Here are a few tips our physiotherapists would recommend to help with the recovery:
- Carry on with your normal activities as much as possible
- Regular exercises for sciatica
- Ask your pharmacist about painkillers
- Put a small, firm cushion between your knees when sleeping on your side.
