Neuro Physiotherapy Overview
Neuro physiotherapy is a branch of physiotherapy that treats motor impairments resulting from neurological injuries such as a brain injury/concussion, spinal cord injury, or stroke.
Neuro physiotherapy can also be used for neurological conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s and Bell’s Palsy. Neuro physiotherapy treatments aim at improving motor function, and preventing permanent disabilities caused by these conditions through focused rehabilitation.
What Are The Goals Of Neuro Physiotherapy Rehabilitation?
- Improve balance
- Improve quality of walking
- Improve function of hands and arms
- Strengthen the body through exercise
- Improve endurance and activity tolerance
- Address orthopedic issues related to the person’s condition
Neuro physiotherapy treatment can take weeks to a year depending on the condition and the severity of the symptoms. It’s also very important to be assessed by a reputable neurologist for diagnosis purposes.

Our Approach & What to Expect on Your First Visit
Our goal is to get you moving and help you return to your regular daily activities!
Our neuro physiotherapist is trained to perform a detailed assessment of your physical function, analyze movement patterns and provide individualized hands-on treatment, as opposed to more modality-based interventions.
Neuro physiotherapy treatment sessions usually involve an extended assessment so that a full subjective interview can take place, along with a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s balance, walking, strength, sensation, reflexes, flexibility and other areas. A customized treatment plan will be created based on the results of your initial assessment.
Our approach is very collaborative, and client centered. Pillars of Wellness is an integrated care clinic offering services other than physiotherapy such as chiropractic care, occupational therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, counselling, speech therapy and yoga therapy. Referrals to other services and practitioners will also be discussed as part of your initial neuro physiotherapy assessment
Initial Assessment
The initial assessment is typically 60 minutes in length. You will be sent an online intake form prior to your assessment to help your neuro physiotherapist prepare for your assessment. It is ideal to be dressed in comfortable clothes as you will be asked to stretch and move around during your assessment and treatment sessions.
Plan of Care
A plan of care will be provided after the initial assessment, including an approximate number of recommended sessions and information regarding other recommended referrals. It is strongly recommended to complete your plan of care and follow treatment guidelines for best results.
